DLI (Daily Light Integral) determines the daily light quantity for optimum growth. Calculation, measurement and optimisation explained.
DLI (Daily Light Integral) is the most important parameter for cannabis lighting:
**What is DLI?
DLI measures the total amount of light a plant receives over 24 hours. Measured in mol/m²/day. Crucial for photosynthesis optimisation.
**Formula for calculating DLI:**
DLI = PPFD × illumination time × 0.0036
*Example:*
- PPFD: 500 μmol/m²/s
- Illumination time: 18 hours
- DLI = 500 × 18 × 0.0036 = 32.4 mol/m²/day
**Optimal DLI values for cannabis:**
*Seedlings (0-2 weeks):*
- DLI: 10-20 mol/m²/day
- PPFD: 150-300 with 18h lighting
- Too much light = bleaching, stress
*Vegetative phase:*
- DLI: 25-40 mol/m²/day
- PPFD: 400-600 with 18h illumination
- Optimal for rapid growth
*Flowering phase:*
- DLI: 35-65 mol/m²/day
- PPFD: 600-1000 with 12h illumination
- Maximum yield without light damage
**DLI measurement in practice:**
*Use Par-Meter:*
- Measures PPFD at several points
- Average for accurate values
- At least 9-point measurement per m²
*Smartphone apps:*
- Photone, PPFD Meter (approximate values only)
- Inaccurate for professional cultivation
- Better than no measurement at all
*Professional sensors:*
- Quantum sensors (Apogee, LI-COR)
- Continuous DLI monitoring
- Data logger for long-term tracking
**DLI optimisation by variety:**
*Sativa-dominant:*
- Higher DLI tolerance (up to 65+)
- Equatorial origin = used to more light
- Can tolerate intensive lighting
*Indica-dominant:*
- Moderate DLI values (35-50)
- Mountainous regions = less direct light
- More susceptible to light burn
*Autoflower:*
- DLI 25-45 with 18-20h lighting
- Ruderalis genetics = lower light requirements
- Continuous lighting possible
**Symptoms of incorrect DLI:**
*DLI too low:*
- Long-legged growth (stretch)
- Thin, weak stems
- Small, loose flowers
- Pale leaves
*DLI too high:*
- Light burn (white/yellow leaf tips)
- Taco leaves (curved upwards)
- Bleaching of the flowers
- Stressed, compact plants
**Consider environmental factors:**
*CO2 content:*
- Normal air (400ppm): Standard DLI values
- CO2-Anreicherung (1200-1500ppm): +20-30% DLI possible
- Without CO2 boost: DLI over 45 often wasted
*Temperature:*
- Higher temperatures = higher DLI tolerated
- 24-26°C optimal for high DLI
- Below 20°C: Reduce DLI
*Humidity:*
- Note VPD (Vapour Pressure Deficit)
- Optimum VPD with high DLI: 1.0-1.2 kPa
**Practical DLI tips:**
*LED setup:*
- Use dimmers for different phases
- Adjust height instead of just dimming
- Even distribution more important than maximum values
*Adjust light cycles:*
- Same DLI for different lighting times
- 18/6 vs 20/4 vs 24/0 for autoflowers
- 12/12 fixed for photoperiodic in bloom
*Cost saving:*
- Reach maximum DLI, then do not increase further
- Optimise electricity costs vs. yield
- Efficient LEDs for better DLI/watt ratio
**DLI tracking via the grow:**
Keep a DLI diary:
- Weekly PPFD measurements
- DLI calculation and adjustment
- Plant reaction
