Understanding cannabis genetics: Sativa, Indica, Ruderalis

Understanding the differences between cannabis subspecies helps with variety selection. Effect, growth and cultivation characteristics explained.

Understanding cannabis genetics helps you choose the best strain for every purpose:

**Cannabis Sativa**

Originally from equatorial regions (Thailand, Colombia, Mexico).

*Growth characteristics:*

- Tall, slender plants (2-4+ metres)

- Long, thin leaves with 7-13 fingers

- Longer flowering time (10-16 weeks)

- Open, airy flower structure

- More stretch in the flower

*Effect:*

- Energetic, creative, euphoric

- Head high

- Less sedating

- Ideal for daytime use

- Higher THC:CBD ratio often

*Cultivation:*

- Needs a lot of space vertically

- Training necessary indoors

- Tolerates higher temperatures

- Longer vegetation period necessary

**Cannabis Indica**

Originally from mountainous regions (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India).

*Growth characteristics:*

- Compact, bushy plants (1-2 metres)

- Broad, short leaves with 5-9 fingers

- Shorter flowering time (6-9 weeks)

- Dense, compact flowers

- Less stretch, more side shoots

*Effect:*

- Relaxing, calming, physical

- Body-heavy ("body high")

- Sedative, sleep-inducing

- Ideal for evenings

- Often balanced THC:CBD ratio

*Cultivation:*

- Ideal for indoor cultivation

- Less training required

- Prefers cooler temperatures

- Faster harvest possible

**Cannabis Ruderalis**

From cold regions (Siberia, Eastern Europe).

*Characteristics:*

- Very small plants (30-80cm)

- Autoflowering genetics

- Low THC content naturally

- Extremely robust and cold tolerant

- Flowers regardless of light hours

*Use:*

- Base for autoflower hybrids

- Rarely grown pure

- Brings robustness to crosses

- Enables automatic flowering

**Modern hybrids**

Today, almost all varieties are hybrids of the three subspecies.

*Hybrid types:*

- Sativa-dominant: 60-90% sativa genetics

- Indica-dominant: 60-90% indica genetics

- Balanced: 40-60% of both

- Autoflower: With ruderalis genetics

*Variety selection tips:*

- Indoor, little space → Indica-dominant

- Outdoor, lots of space → Sativa-dominant

- Beginners → Autoflower hybrids

- Fast harvest → Indica or autoflower

- Maximum potency → Modern sativa hybrids

**Known example strains:**

- Classic Sativa: Amnesia Haze, Jack Herer

- Classic Indica: Northern Lights, Afghan Kush

- Balanced hybrids: Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies

- Autoflower: White Widow Auto, AK-47 Auto
