Set up a DWC system: Mastering Deep Water Culture

Deep Water Culture (DWC) is the most efficient hydroponic system for cannabis:

**DWC basic principle:**

Roots are suspended directly in oxygen-rich nutrient solution. Continuous aeration prevents root rot and maximises nutrient uptake.

**DWC system components:**

*Reservoir:*

- 20-50 litres per plant

- Opaque (prevent algae)

- Lid for net pots

- Drain tap for water change

*Air pump and stones:*

- Aquarium air pump (min. 2W per 10 litres)

- Several air stones for even distribution

- UV-resistant air hose

- Redundancy through second pump

*Net pots and medium:*

- 3-6 inch net pots

- Expanded clay as substrate

- Rockwool cubes for seedlings

- Rinse Hydroton before use

**System setup:**

*Prepare reservoir:*

- Cut holes for net pots

- Position air stones

- Water level markings

- Seal all connections

*Install aeration:*

- Place air pump outside

- Distribute multiple air stones

- ensure 24/7 operation

- Set up a backup system

*Insert plants:*

- Rooted clones or seedlings

- In Rockwool cube

- Fill net pot with expanded clay

- Roots up to water line

**Nutrient solution management:**

*Mix and pH:*

- Use hydro nutrients

- EC 0.8-2.0 depending on phase

- maintain pH 5.5-6.0

- Check daily

*Water change:*

- Completely renew weekly

- Earlier if EC increases

- Clean reservoir

- Mix fresh solution

**DWC advantages:**

**Common DWC problems:**

*Root rot:*

- Insufficient aeration

- Water temperature too high

- Light entering the reservoir

- Solution: More air, cooling, darkening

*Algae growth:*

- Light in the reservoir

- Too many nutrients

- Solution: Darken completely, H2O2 treatment

*pH fluctuations:*

- Young roots influence pH

- Bacteria change chemistry

- Solution: Check more frequently, pH buffer

**Maintenance and care:**

*Daily tasks:*

- Check water level

- measure pH and EC

- Check air pump

- Inspect roots

*Weekly tasks:*

- Complete water change

- Clean reservoir

- Rinse air stones
