Topping and FIM: breaking through apical dominance

Topping and FIM technology stop vertical growth and promote bushy plants with more main shoots.

Topping and FIM are proven techniques for modifying the structure of cannabis plants:

**Understanding Apical Dominance:**

Cannabis grows naturally with a dominant main stem that suppresses other branches.

**Topping technique:**

*What is topping:*

- Complete removal of the main tip

- Stops vertical growth

- Promotes two new main shoots

- Breaks apical dominance

*Topping timing:*

- After 4-6 nodes

- At least 2 weeks before flowering

- Plant must be healthy

- Never on stressed plants

*Topping execution:*

- Use clean, sharp scissors

- Cut above the 3rd-4th nodes

- Clean, straight cut

- Allow wound to heal open

*Multiple topping:*

- After 1-2 weeks recovery

- Top new main shoots again

- Exponential growth of the colas

- 4, 8, 16 main shoots possible

**FIM technique (Fuck I Missed):**

*What is FIM:*

- Incomplete removal of the tip

- cut off 75% of the tip

- Usually 3-4 new shoots instead of 2

- Less stress than topping

*FIM advantages:*

- Faster recovery

- More new shoots possible

- Less risk of shock

- More flexible results

*FIM design:*

- Leave only the top quarter

- Cut between new leaves

- Precision more important than with topping

- Fingernails or small scissors

**Aftercare:**

*First 24-48 hours:*

- Observe plants

- Ensure optimal conditions

- Minimise stress

- No further manipulation

*First week:*

- New shoots appear

- Growth slows down

- Continue normal care

- Be patient

*Second week:*

- Significant new shoots

- Accelerated growth

- Further training possible

- Structural change visible

**Combined techniques:**

*Topping + LST:*

- Topping for more main shoots

- LST for horizontal distribution

- Maximum light exposure

- Optimum combination

*Topping + SCROG:*

- Topping in vegetation phase

- SCROG in pre-flower

- Perfect grid filling

- Highest yields

*FIM + defoliation:*

- FIM for new shoots

- Defoliation for light penetration

- Better air circulation

- Focus on flowering points

**Variety-specific adaptations:**

*Indica varieties:*

- Respond well to topping

- Compact, bushy growth

- Less stretch after topping

- Earlier application possible

*Sativa varieties:*

- Benefit greatly from topping

- Controlled vertical growth

- More structure management required

- Longer recovery time

*Autoflower:*

- Only for vigorous plants

- Top very early (3rd week)

- Less aggressive techniques

- FIM often more suitable

**Timing and planning:**

*Extend vegetation period:*

- Topping needs recovery time

- allow an additional 1-2 weeks

- Not shortly before the planned flowering change

- Enough time for structure build-up

*Flowering preparation:*

- Minimum 2 weeks before flowering

- All new shoots developed

- Structure finally formed

- Stress completely reduced

**Frequent mistakes:**

*Topping too late:*

- Shortly before or in bloom

- Plant does not recover

- Yield losses

- Stress in critical phase

*Non-sterile tools:*

- Infection
