Spider mites are one of the most common pests in indoor growing. They multiply rapidly and can severely weaken plants. In this guide, you will learn how to recognise spider mites at an early stage and
Spider mites (Tetranychidae) are tiny, usually reddish-brown pests that are particularly prevalent in dry, warm air. They suck plant juices from the leaves, which leads to silvery spots ("sucking damage"). A clear indication is the typical fine spider web on the leaf axils.
Symptoms of infestation:
Small, light-coloured dots on the upper side of the leaves
Yellow discolouration and dry damage to leaf edges
Fine netting between leaf and stem
Growth slows down noticeably
Control:
Adapt climate: Increase humidity to 55-65 %, lower temperature
Spray leaves regularly - spider mites do not like moisture
Apply predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) - they eat spider mites within a few days
Neem oil or potash soap as a natural emergency measure - wet the leaves well, including the underside of the leaves
Caution: Chemicals are taboo during flowering! Residues jeopardise consumption.
